Pat Nevin (my sporting hero, and lovely guy to boot)
Steve Redgrave (consistency in a tough sport)
Tim Foster (member of Redgrave's four who overcame back surgery to win Olympic gold...and another very nice man)
Kelly Holmes (double Olympic gold after all those injuries, nuff said)
Paula Radcliffe (you may have noticed the slight Bedford bias here, but an amazing woman, has the marathon world record by a country mile)

Pele and Ali go without saying. To them I would add Bobby Moore, Steve Redgrave and either I.T. Botham or Gareth Edwards for that try 35 years ago for the Barbarians v the All Blacks.

It's probably someone whose name would be known for the sporting accomplishments to people who weren't interested in sport - though sporting legends would vary from one part of the world to another, or one country to another.
Hence Donald Bradman, Babe Ruth and Teofilio Stevenson would each be legends in their own country, but perhaps not elsewhere
I'd probably take Ali, Bradman, Bobby Charlton, Pele and Redgrave.

I notice that the name Maradona doesn't appear , yet whenever 'Greatest footballer' is mentioned a lot of people mention him. I always thought Pele was far better.
My legends are:
Sir Ian Botham
Ali
Pele
Lance Armstrong
Jesse Owens
Sadly no room for Barry Cowdrill.
