John Lloyd Davis Cup captaincy in doubt after Lithuania loss

John Lloyd Davis Cup captaincy in doubt after Lithuania loss John Lloyd's future as captain of Britain's Davis Cup team is in jeopardy after he presided over a humiliating 3-2 loss to Lithuania this weekend.

The defeat means Lloyd is the first ever captain to guide Britain to five successive defeats and forces Team GB into a playoff to avoid dropping down to the lowest tier.

British number three Dan Evans, world number 252, lost the deciding singles match against Lithuanian number two Laurynas Grigelis, ranked 521 in the world, in Vilnius 7-6, 5-7, 0-6, 6-2, 4-6.

After the defeat Lloyd said he was "incredibly disappointed".

"I'm particularly gutted for Dan because he played his heart out out there. But it was a 50-50 match before we started, and they were the better team," he continued. "Grigelis was at times, stunning."

Steven Martens, player director at the Lawn Tennis Association, commented: "This is a very disappointing result. Now we have to learn from it. So, in the next few days, John and I will review the match, and see where we can improve."ADNFCR-8000010-ID-19655474-ADNFCR
