Dawson claims talks with Calzaghe

Dawson claims talks with Calzaghe Light-heavyweight world champion Chad Dawson claims he is in talks with Joe Calzaghe's representatives over a possible fight next year.

Calzaghe holds the Ring Magazine title and is considered to be the linear champion at the weight after having stepped up from super-middle-weight and beaten Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Junior in his last two bouts.

The Welshman had indicated before his fight with Jones that he may retire following the bout in New York.

However, he won that fight so comprehensively that a final farewell in front of his home fans was not ruled out.

Dawson has recently beaten former champion Antonio Tarver and claims he is the only man left for Calzaghe to fight.

The 26-year-old currently holds the IBF version of the title and his manager Mike Criscio says he would be happy to fight in the UK.

"It's definitely a fight that I want," Dawson said.

"It's something I've wanted since Calzaghe stepped up to light heavyweight.

"There's a little talk going on between the two parties."

Following the Jones fight there is confusion over whether Calzaghe really will retire or not but Criscio is adamant the 36-year-old is looking for one final bout.

"He's definitely not retiring," insisted Criscio.

He added: "We'd go to the UK in a heartbeat. In front of 72,000 people in Wales, that would be a great fight.

"If Chad wins he makes a name for himself. If Joe wins he'll have beaten everybody and he can retire because there's nobody else to fight."

Calazghe remains undefeated in 46 professional contests in a career that has lasted more than 15 years.
