Great Britain finished third in the inaugural European Team Championship in Portugal.Disgraced sprinter Dwain Chambers, who replaced the injured Rikki Fifton, was Britain's top point scorer after his victories in the 100 metres and 200 metres races. Andy Turner was the only individual champion in the hurdles, while the men's 4x400m relay team lifted the team into bronze medal position with victory in the final event. But Chambers, who served a two-year drug ban in 2004, will again make the headlines after outclassing Martial Mbandjock and Alex Kosenkow of Poland in the 200 metres. The 31-year-old said his next target is the European Championships in August. "It's good be a team player but I'm definitely smashed," he said. "The 200m is not my specialist event and I didn't know what I could do against these guys. "I am very tired, the weather is very hot but I have to do this in order to become stronger and faster. "This was about getting points for the team. I thought 'go for it' and not lose." Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu and triple jump silver medallist Phillips Idowu were only other Britons to get a podium finish. Idowu lost to Portugal's Nelson Evora by nine centimetres, while Ohuruogu, third behind Russia's Yuliya Gushchina and Polands Marta Jeschke of Poland in the 200 metres.
