Aston Villa 1887

In season 1886-87 Villa won the F.A. Cup for the first time. The Captain, Archie Hunter recalls that when Villa played Darwen at Perry Barr on 12th February 1887 "At half-time the Rugby Cup was put on the field and filled with champagne by Mr Amos Roe and during the interval each of the players was invited to drink a little of the exhilarating beverage." Villa were 3 - 0 up at the interval but Darwen quickly scored two goals and it seems the partaking may have had an effect on play.

Can you shed any light, please, on why Mr Amos Roe would have brought along the Rugby Cup to Wellington Road on such an occasion?
