Can anyone explain to a mere female why one of the Tongan tries was allowed - the one where he went down inside the pitch and then slid over the line to score?

Not quite Corby. If you can still reach over the line with your arm after you have stopped sliding then it's still ok. It's when you make a double movement with your body on the ground such as crawling that's a no go. In this case his momentum carried him over the line to score which is allowed

Yes momentum is allowed, in fact it can be very useful, when it's raining and the grass is very slippery many a time one of our wingers has dived 5 yards short and slid over the line. Very difficult to tackle they are already on the deck!
