In 2004 the United Kingdom competed in the Olympics under the heading GB and Northern Ireland. In 2008 it seems to have become Team GB. What happened to Northern Ireland as GB&NI is really the United Kingdom ?

Why are we called 'GB' when this refers to Eng. Scot. & Wales only?
As the team includes Northern Ireland why is it not 'UK' as in most other events eg 'Eurovision song'.?

i know that there are 302 events in this years olympics but how many medals are awarded in total considering the team events when the 1st 2nd and 3rd would get a medal each and also (i think) the losing semi finalis…
