If you look at the hole, on one side of the hole the grass is leaning into the hole and the other side it will be leaning away.
also, when you look into the grain of the grass the grass that is leaning towards you will look darker, away from you (with the grain) it will look lighter in colour
when reading the green you need to look from the sides as well as up and down the putt to see which side is darker, so you can follow which way the grain is going.

The grain has a tendency to grow toward the sun and bends with the water that flows off the green. As a result, putts with the grain are faster and break more and vice versa. If you're on the putting green you can run your putter across it to find out. Please make sure to repair the green and never do it during the course of a round, it's illegal.
