Ryder cup history (pre-EU)

I believe our team was called GB then 'GB & IRL' from 1971. But surely many Irish players represented before this eg Christy O'Conner snr.

As far as I know, they were always called GB & Ireland. That was one of the stipulations that Sam Ryder made when he set up the first competition.

But to repeat an earlier thread I posted, I think the competition should be scrapped, as it's just turned into a commercialised, money-making needle match, fuelled by the money-grabbing media. I think Sam Ryder would be turning in his grave if he could see the antics now.
