Golf

After several days of a men only golf tournament I see that there are several days of a ladies only golf tounament scheduled for this weekend. On the basis that the game involves skill rather than brute strength I wonder whether there are any tournaments where men and women play each other on an equal footing? Some of our most successful golfers were women.

My old uncle Shamus always said that he enjoyed playing a round with ladies on the golf course. (That's why the club cancelled his membership.)

It's not strictly correct to say that the game's not about brute strength. The professional men hit the ball considerably further than the top women. From what I've seen the women are every bit as skillful from around 150-160 yards from the green and they are exceptionally good putters. However, if they were playing from the same tees as the men they would regularly be hitting their approach shots to the green from 20-50 yards further away, which gives the men a huge advantage.

To give an example, the last time a woman made the cut in a men's professional tournament was Mildred (Babe) Zacharias back in 1947. Anneka Sorenstam tried one tournament a few years ago and missed the cut by just one shot whereas Michelle Wie has tried nine times without success.

As I recall, Mildred Zaharias got her nickname after setting a record for the distance she could throw a baseball, which suggest that upper body strength was not too much of a problem for her.
