If you are really going to get into it don't waste time on cheap oversized biff clubs, get something midsized when it comes to irons, you probably want a cavity backed (or graduated ) set for forgiveness but really you should go and get custom fit somewhere which is not affiliated to one manufacturer eg true fit golf. invest now it will be worth it long term it took me a year to get used to my new clubs i've dropped 9 shots in handicap this season. In summary Get measured, spend the money now it'll pay off down the line.

Don't go spending 100's of £'s on a "name" set of irons. Most club heads are made in very few (less than 10) factories in the Far East and some of them end up as "clones" - I have been playing golf for many years and am off a 10 handicap nowadays and I bought a set of clones (copies of the Callaway X18) last year after having had various expensive brand name sets, and believe me these are just as good at a fraction of the price!
I would advise you, or anyone else thinking of new clubs, to go to your local driving range or friendly pro and get hold of a few different "demo" clubs and try them out. When you settle for one, find out what shaft suits your swing. Then go on one of the web sites (American ones are best) and answer a few basic questions about your size, age etc and they will construct the clubs to your specifications, ie length, lie angle, grip thickness, shaft flex. I am loathe to recommend a site, but I used Giga Golf and found them excellent - there are others. I ordered mine on a Wednesday and they were delivered to my UK address the following Monday - all for less than £140 including VAT and postage.
If you think about it, if two men of different heights, strength, swing speed etc etc go to a golf shop for new clubs off the shelf they could end up buying the same clubs, and if they suit one man they certainly won't suit the other!
Good luck!

failing that, if you want to buy a decent set and your not sure try sports world, they sell a complete set for under 100 quid,
when I began I bought a set of these and dont let anyone say they are naff because i can hit my clubs at the same distance as their pings and callaways!
