RESPECT CAMPAIGN GONE SOUR-support Graham Poll's Campaign
My point is from the angle of an ex-Pe Teacher, referee and semi-professional footballer in the 80's and 90's.
For a start, my local Sunday League often fails to appoint referees for games due to a total lack of respect for officials. This is due in no small part to the blindingly disgraceful example set by overpaid prima donnas like Rooney, Cole, Terry et al.
I cannot believe that all you intelligent people out there can support teams where players and fans abuse officials (ref recent coin throwing incident aimed at my new hero Harry Redknapp - *** on you Spurs!!)
My radical plan ( I do not think it has been followed through yet?) is for the FA and Premier League to collaborate on a training course for all players on the Laws of the Game (so many players do not understand them and I did not until forced to take an exam as part of the old FA Preliminary Coaching Badge). Further, why are all the top managers who are supposed to be qualified with their UEFA coaching badges not teaching their players respect for the laws and the referees?
We could learn a few lessons from Rugby Union on the players appreciation of the Laws and their continuing respect for referees even in this new professional era. Only the captain speaks to the ref and we had to call him sir when I played! Here endeth my current soapbox speech!!!

Excellent post david. This so called beautiful game has been turned into the BOOTIFUL game. The so called role model players you mention are only the tip of the ice berg. who set an awful example to all youngsters, look at any school or park games, the mentality has been cemented.
I remember my hero Bill Shankly saying the problems with refs is they know the rules but not the game. I would reverse that script & aim it at these idiotic players.
You also point out why the managers do not teach players to have respect for the officials. I think it maybe a good idea if the managers were also taught to have some respect for them. It makes me laugh when events on the field encourage some managers to have a go at the 4th official, what can he do ? Still i suppose it keeps the money men, the media & the fans something to keep their small minds occupied.
