Starting blocks

Starting blocks are used on athletic tracks. Runners push their feet against them to get the fastest possible start. What else can they be used for ?

hi JJ en zzxxee, i think... if blahdiblah was after an athletics answer the starting blocks could be used to detect false starts...
otherwise i think would make great paper weights JJ wink
